iPhone 3G: Battery Life – Part 5
UPDATE: Once you are done reading this post, make sure to go to the homepage of this blog (http://gadgettechie.net) to read the other parts of this series. You can also click on the Apple category on the right of this page.
You can find the other parts of this series here: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, and Part 5.
The setup for this run was as follows:
-3G OFF
-Wifi OFF
-Location Services (GPS) OFF
-Push OFF
-Fetch Every 15 Minutes
-Brightness halfway with auto brightness OFF
I was unable to get the last screenshot for the usage time because the phone restarted but I got one from the 20% notification point. Even though this screenshot is not from right before the battery drained completely, the fact that it was at the 20% mark with such low usage times suggests that the battery still did not last that long.
Here is the screenshot:
Let’s say that we can squeeze an extra hour, heck lets be generous and assume we squeezed 2 extra hours of usage after this screenshot was taken. That still leaves us with 6 hours and 46 minutes of usage with every feature turned off and using EDGE only. That is not good!
At this point I have no idea what is going on. I am not using my C.E.O. Premiere with the magnetic flap anymore so that cannot be the cause of such low battery life. The only thing I can think of is that somehow the fetch at 15 minute intervals is draining the battery drastically. But even if that is the case, that fetch that is occuring every 15 minutes should add to the usage time so even though it happens frequently and drains the battery, that just means usage time is also being added frequently, thus leading to higher usage times.
What really bugs me is that I am able to get very similar usage times with 3G ON (Check Part 4)!!!! That is just wrong!
What do you guys think? If any of you have been keeping up with these battery life tests, let me know what you think I should test next or what you think is going on by leaving a comment.
I have until Thursday to return the phone if I decide to do that…

Dude, it made me sad that all those eloquent and informative posts went without any comments. (lol) That said, I don’t have any recommendation. =P
You could take the risk with another iPhone but given what you have gone through (and your usual bad luck with returns) I’d stick with it at this point.

Very informative post, thanks for sharing! I’ve heard of the same thing happening with a friends phone.

Reduced my brightness down to about a quarter way full.
Battery is still a bit more than half full with:
4 hours 36 mins usage
1 day 4 hours standby
3G has been on throughout.
Everything else off apart from location services.
All the usage consisted of around an hour and a half music through headphones, an hour text messaging and the rest browsing the net with 3G and mostly WiFi.
IMO, brightness is the biggest drainer.
